No apologies, Rivers is a Christian state – Gov Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has stated that his administration will continue to partner with the church for the development of the State.

Speaking on Sunday during the Lord’s Chosen Crusade with the theme: “God has the power to do this or that” at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, Governor Wike attributed his political survival to the support and prayers of the Christian community.

He said the forces of darkness invaded the state and attempted to rob the mandate of the people, but God stood firm.

“We saw forces, but the greater force, God Almighty came. With this crusade. Rivers State will be abundantly blessed.

“I repeat once again without apologies, Rivers State is a Christian State. That is why nobody can touch us. When it mattered most, the Christian community prayed and God heard your prayers.

“I will continue to support the activities of all Churches. This Government will always partner with the churches , whatever the programme they are engaged in. I urge the Church to continue to pray. Each time you pray, put us in your prayers”, he said.

Woman arrested for posing as Sanwo-Olu’s aide at Italian Embassy to secure visas

A woman has been arrested for posing as an official from the Lagos State Governor’s Office at Italian Embassy in a bid to secure visas for some members of the public.

It was gathered that the middle-aged woman (name withheld) was arrested at the weekend following an intelligence on the usage of the Governor’s office to seek visas for some people.

A statement issued by Gboyega Akosile, Deputy Chief Press Secretary to Governor Babatunde Sanwo-Olu said the suspect, via an e-mail sent to the Embassy of Italy in Lagos allegedly posed as an official of Lagos State government and sought the country’s visas for some unsuspecting Nigerians.

The government said the embassy, however, wrote to the Governor’s Office to authenticate the claims, which were later found to be false.

It said the letter from the Italian embassy led to further investigation and her subsequent arrest and interrogation.

The government said, although, she denied the allegation claiming that her email was hacked, the Lagos State Governor’s office had sent the matter to the appropriate security agencies for appropriate action.

In the light of this, the Governor’s office had alerted members of the public to be wary of some people who might fraudulently use the office to commit criminal act.

In the meantime, the office has warned members of the public not to deal with any persons who paraded themselves as government representatives in consular matters.

Heavy rain kills 14 yesterday in India

At least 14 people were killed and more than 50 injured when heavy rain and strong winds caused a huge tent to collapse in the Indian state of Rajasthan on Sunday.

Some were electrocuted by live wires as the tent caved in, and others killed by falling debris, Reuters reported.

Some 300 people had gathered inside the tent for a religious event. The collapse took place in the Barmer district of the north-western state.

The state's disaster management and relief minister Bhanwar Lal Meghwal questioned why organisers had not switched off the power supply in view of the wet weather.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident "unfortunate" in a tweet on Sunday, saying his thoughts were "with the bereaved families".

Mexico auctions drug lords' houses, says proceed will go towards those affected by drug gang violence

Houses with swimming pools and escape tunnels, a large ranch and an apartment where a cartel leader was killed are all up for sale.

Mexico's President Andres Manuel López Obrador had pledged that profits from the auction would go towards those affected by drug gang violence.

But only nine of the 27 properties on offer actually sold.

According to Mexican media, the auction raised 56.6m pesos ($3m) of the 167m pesos predicted.

Mr López Obrador said that the money would help poor and marginalised communities in the violent state of Guerrero.

At the end of May, a similar auction raised $1.5m by selling the homes and cars of criminals, including at least one former politician. A Lamborghini was among the items on sale.

Authorities said many more auctions would take place over the coming months.

Mr López Obrador, who was elected last year, has also promised to sell his presidential plane to fund efforts to curb illegal migration.

Brother stabs little sister 17 TIMES to punish mom for her ‘wrong ways’

Paris Bennett walked calmly into the sleeping four-year-old girl’s bedroom, throttled and battered her and then stabbed her 17 times to ensure she was dead.

The deranged killer had made sure no one else was in the house when he chose his moment for murder.

It was cruel and highly calculated. But it becomes incomprehensibly dark once you know the little girl was his sister, Ella – and he himself was just 13.

He butchered the innocent youngster to wreak revenge on his mother, Charity, because he felt she gave her daughter more attention than him and she had also slipped back into using drugs.

He coldly plotted that the best way of punishing her was not to kill her but his sister, knowing he would end up in jail and that way she would lose both children in one go.

The single mum says of the pain her son inflicted on her: “If he left me alive without Ella, I would suffer for the rest of my life.”

Now 12 years on from that night in February 2007, Bennett, 25, is still deemed a psychopath too dangerous to be in the same room as an interviewer.

And in a new ITV documentary this week, he tells Piers Morgan from behind heavily reinforced glass and monitored by armed guards: “For many years, there was just this hot, flaming ball of wrath in the pit of my stomach and it was directed at my mother.

"And one of the reasons why I chose to kill my sister and not someone else is because I knew by doing that I could hurt my mother in the worst possible way, because I had always known, as a child, that the most devastating thing to my mother would be the loss of one of her children, and I found a way to take away both her children in one fell swoop.

"It wasn’t like I was crafting a plan to rob a bank, where I knew at this time I would do this. A deeper darker part of me knew what I was going to do.

“I understood in an intuitive way I was going to do something.”

Bennett, who has a “genius” IQ of 141, briefly stopped after he had stabbed his sister twice in rural Abilene, Texas, but then continued. Asked why he didn’t save her when he realised he was doing wrong, he replies: “I remember I was struggling with myself.

“One part of me knew I was doing wrong and that part of me loved my sister and would have turned the world upside down for her, but there was another part of me that was wounded, twisted, dark... the part that had been in pain for so long and wanted to give it to someone else.

"I remember, even during the time I was stabbing her I was struggling with myself to stop it but I didn’t struggle hard enough. I didn’t put up a good enough fight.

“Once I had started it was too late, I couldn’t stop. I had to see it through to the end.” Bennett’s plot to kill his sister was so meticulously planned he had, earlier in the evening, convinced their babysitter to go home.

He later confessed to having had homicidal thoughts since the age of eight, often expressing them through violent and disturbing drawings.

4 Britons, 2 Americans, 1 Australian and 1 Indian that all went missing in May on Indian mountain are dead

Police on Sunday retrieved the bodies of seven climbers killed in an avalanche near India’s second-highest mountain late last month and are still looking for an eighth, officials said on Sunday.

The eight climbers - four from Britain, two from the United States, and one each from Australia and India - were reported missing on May 31 after they failed to return to their base camp near Nanda Devi.

The climbers were attempting to scale an unnamed, previously unclimbed 6,477 metre (21,250 feet) peak near Nanda Devi when their route was hit by a “sizeable avalanche”, the company that organized the expedition, Moran Mountain, has said.

The paramilitary Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Force was leading the mission to bring the bodies to the town of Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand state.

A 20-member ITBP team, which started out on foot last week, on Sunday reached the area where the bodies were suspected to be missing, said Vivek Kumar Pandey, a spokesman for the ITBP.

“After a five-hour operation, they have recovered the bodies of seven climbers,” Pandey said.

The recovered bodies, which include that an Indian and a female climber, are yet to be formally identified, he said.

The search operation will continue for the last body, Pithoragrah district’s top civil servant Vijay Kumar Jogdande said.

New Bauchi Governor says, immediate ex-governor spent N2.3bn on burial in five months

The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has alleged that his predecessor, Mohammed Abubakar, spent N2.3bn to buy materials for burial in the state.

But Abubakar has dismissed the allegation, describing it as laughable.

The governor, who spoke through his spokesperson, Dr Ladan Salihu, in an interview with journalists in Bauchi, said the funds were spent between January and May, 2019.

He explained that over N900m was spent on the purchase of white cloth used for wrapping corpses while over N1.4bn was used to buy the wood for lacing the graves after burial.

According to him, the government discovered issues of corruption, venality, daylight robbery of the commonwealth of the people of the state.

Ladan alleged, “This money which ought to have been appropriated by the state House of Assembly before expenditure, all of a sudden emanated from our treasury books. How could you imagine that a state government, within five months, that is, between January and May, 2019, spent well over N2.3bn on funeral materials, dresses for wrapping dead bodies and the woods that you lace the graveyards with.”

Asked if the state government had any proof to substantiate its claim, he said there was no iota of doubt on the matter, saying that there was documentary evidence to prove that.

“All these are captured in the report of the transition committee and these were gathered from documents and vouchers and payments made from our treasury books. There is the Freedom of Information Law, use it and find out for yourself from those documents,” Ladan said.

The governor’s spokesman vowed that the state government would use every instrument of the law, including petitioning the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission and other anti-corruption agencies on the matter, “until every kobo stolen is returned.”

Aftermath of destruction at Nigerian Embassy… FG set to meet with Nigerian communities in the Diaspora

The Federal Government plans to hold a series of stakeholders meetings with the Nigerian communities in the Diaspora as part of efforts to address rising tensions between Nigerians and Nigerian embassies and missions in some countries.

The meetings are also to identify the challenges faced by the Diaspora Nigerians and find urgent solutions to them.

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, disclosed this in Abuja after she held a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Dabiri-Erewa, who spoke with State House correspondents, also said she used the visit to brief Buhari on the work of the commission so far since the confirmation of her appointment as NIDCOM CEO by the Senate in May.

On the stakeholders’ meeting, she said it had become necessary following the action of a 32-year-old Nigerian, Jeffrey  Ewohime, who destroyed Nigerian High Commission vehicles in London last week.

Ajimobi advoses new Oyo Governor, Seyi Makinde

The immediate past Governor of Oyo State, Chief Abiola Ajimobi, has admonished his successor, Gov. Seyi Makinde, to ensure that he does not lower the bar of governance in the state.

Ajimobi wants his younger successor to concentrate on building on the successes recorded by his administration and stop looking for mundane issues.

The former governor, at a reception organised for him by Ibadan Elders’ Forum on Saturday, said the state could not afford to go backward in terms of development.

“I pray that Makinde succeeds as governor of the state. It is in our interest that he should succeed.

“We have raised the bar of governance in this state and can’t afford to see it go down again.

“I heard them say that members of our cabinet carted away government cars. We have served and left. He should stop looking at mundane issues,” he said.

The former governor said that those he worked with during his time did not profess themselves to be perfect, urging the new governor to build on their success in the interest of the citizenry.

Ajimobi said his administration met the state in bricks and left it in marbles, urging Makinde to be a progressive governor.

“He must build and not demolish. He must correct and not destroy. We must not return to the era of brigandage.

“We know the dual carriage roads we built can’t be returned to single lane and the bridges we have constructed cannot be pulled down. We have taken Oyo to greater heights and it must not go down.

“Every journey begins with a step and it ends with a step. We did not achieve perfection but achieved successes,” Ajimobi said.

Again, London mayor insults President Trump, describes him as a “6ft 3 child in the White House”

London mayor Sadiq Khan has fired another insult to Donald Trump, describing him a “6ft 3 child in the White House”.

It is the latest insult thrown by Mr Khan at the US president, in what has now become a long-running feud.

In a room full of teachers at the Together for Education event in Westminster’s Central Hall on Saturday, Mr Khan joked that he had made sure to switch his phone off.

He added: “For those of you that have your phones on, if somebody starts tweeting about me – a 6ft 3 child in the White House – can you let me know?”

The remark prompted laughter, cheers and applause from the teachers gathered in the hall.

Earlier this month Mr Trump called Mr Khan a “stone cold loser”, mocked his height and misspelt his name in a tweet sent as he touched down in Air Force One for a state visit to the UK earlier this month.

The president also dubbed Mr Khan a “disaster” on Twitter and called him a “national disgrace who is destroying the city of London”, while quoting a racist tweet by far-right, Islamophobic activist Katie Hopkins.

Saturday’s light-hearted remarks were the latest salvo in a transatlantic exchange that has seen Mr Khan describe Mr Trump as a “poster boy for racists” and note that the president appears “obsessed” with him.

Nigerian man is sentenced to 30 years imprisonment in Tanzania over drugs

Tanzania’s High Court for Economic Corruption and Organized Crime Division has sentenced Nigerian, Christian Ugbechi to 30 years imprisonment for trafficking in 56 pellets of Heroin Hydrochloride, narcotic drugs, weighing 947.57 grams.

Tanzania’s Daily News reported that Judge Sirilius Matupa imposed the sentence on Friday after convicting Ugbechi of the offence.

The judge said he was satisfied by the evidence produced by 11 prosecution witnesses, led by State Attorney Constantine Kakula.

Before Ugbechi was sentenced, the trial attorney requested the court to punish him severely considering the seriousness of the offence committed and that stiff sentence should deter others from committing similar crime.

Jonathan, Atiku react to coup attempt in Ethiopia

Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Jonathan and former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, have condemned the attempted coup to oust Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed.

Their remarks came hours after the Ethiopian Prime Minister confirmed the death of the nation’s chief of army by his own bodyguard in an attempt to foil the coup.

They made the condemnation on Sunday via their respective Twitter account.

Goodluck Jonathan tweet reads: “Nobody’s Political Ambition Is Worth The Blood of Citizens in Ethiopia or Any Other Nation.

“I have long said, believed and practised the principle that nobody’s political ambition is worth the blood of any citizen.

“As such, it bleeds my heart when there is unnecessary and avoidable bloodshed, as has just happened in Ethiopia.

“I condemn the attempted coup against the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

“I go further to call on men and women of goodwill around the world to also condemn such anti-democratic actions and show solidarity to the democratically elected constitutional order in Ethiopia.

“Democracy has come to rest in Africa. Constitutionality and the rule of law are what we in Africa need, especially in the cradle of civilisation and the melting pot of the African Union.

“Africa hopes for a speedy return to normalcy and I stand ready to lend my voice and actions to make that possible. May God bless Africa and may He be with the government and people of Ethiopia at such a trying time.

''Alhaji Atiku Abubakar tweet reads: The coup attempt against the democratically elected government of @PMEthiopia stands condemned. Democracy has come to stay in Africa and we must accept this. As a democrat, my right hand of fellowship is offered to the people of Ethiopia. Long live democracy in Africa -AA.''

This is contained in a statement by the Special Assistant to the Senate President on Media and Publicity, Mohammed Isa.

Abdulfatai Buhari seeks death penalty for kidnappers

Sen. Abdulfatai Buhari (APC-Oyo North) on Sunday recommended capital punishment for kidnapping and other forms of violent crimes in order to tackle growing insecurity in the country.

Buhari told newsmen in Ibadan that the spate of kidnapping and killings across the country would continue unabated if such a drastic measure was not taken.

Buhari was the former Chairman, Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrime, in the 8th National Assembly.

The lawmaker lamented the upsurge in kidnappings and killings across the country, saying violent crimes were becoming a lucrative business for those involved.

“These heinous crimes against humanity have gone beyond the normal Fulani herdsmen attacks and have become a real trade for those who engage in them.

“Let me be honest with you, the situation is nationwide and very worrisome. I believe and I am afraid because Nigerians themselves are yet to take drastic measures.

“I believe by the time anyone caught in the act faces death penalty other people will learn and stop.

”Kidnappers have been arrested, nothing has been done to them. I believe taking them to court is a longer process,’’ he said.

He recalled how increasing rate of drug peddling was stemmed in the 80s through drastic measure, adding that lots of people abandoned the trade as soon as government made those caught in the act to face the firing squad.

The players are also demanding their share of the World Cup participation fee from FIFA, which is not scheduled to be paid out until September.

Mum whose four children died in Salford arson attack in critical condition 18 months after incident

A mum whose four children were killed in a petrol bomb attack is in "critical" condition 18 months on from the tragedy.

Michelle Pearson lost Demi, 15, Brandon, 8, Lacie, 7, and Lia, 3, in the devastating fire in Salford in December 2017.

The 37-year-old mum has been battling to recover after being left in a coma with severe burns to 75 per cent of her body.

Earlier this year, she was filmed in a wheelchair with a tracheostomy tube in her neck and casts on her leg as she released balloons outside hospital.

But last night her mum, Sandra Lever, took to Facebook to tell friends and family her condition had worsened.

She wrote: "We have been reluctant to share Michelle's journey over the past few months as we have been focusing on getting her better.

"Also trying to keep away from the public eye to allow Michelle and the family to grieve.

"However, what people didn't know is that in fact this has been the most challenging time for Michelle and the family.

"Michelle's health has deteriorated in the past 10 weeks, Michelle is still in critical health and still remains in hospital until further notice."
