Breaking! Photos: Fire guts Katangowa Market in Lagos

Properties worth miliions of naira have been destroyed in an early morning inferno, Monday, August 19, when raging fire gutted part of Katangowa Market, Super bus stop in Agbado-Okeodo, along Lagos Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos.

This is coming barely 24 hours after a free-for-all broke out between some Hausa and Yoruba traders over a minor misunderstanding in the same area yesterday.

The fire is said to have started at around 3.15am, and destroyed the entire stretch of shops where fairly used clothes are being sold located opposite the Central Mosque in the market.

Though no life has been reported lost, the immediate or remote cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be known.

Man who threatened to carry out a shooting at Jewish community centre is arrested

Police in the US state of Ohio have arrested a man they believe threatened to carry out a shooting at a Jewish community centre.

James Reardon, 20, posted a video online of a man firing a gun with a caption identifying the centre in Youngstown, north of Pittsburgh.

A search of his home revealed several weapons, body armour and a gas mask, police said.

A shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh last year left 11 people dead.

James Reardon was arrested in New Middletown, near Youngstown, on Saturday and charged with menacing and harassment. He is due to appear in court on Monday.

Investigators said the alarm was raised when a post appeared on Instagram showing a man firing a gun with the caption: "Police identified the Youngstown Jewish Family Community shooter as white nationalist Seamus O'Reardon."

Man who authorities in Australia had put N25m bounty on for committing murder is caught

One of Australia's most wanted fugitives has been caught after more than two years on the run over a murder at a major shopping centre, police say.

Jonathan Dick, 41, is suspected of killing his brother, David Dick, with a sword in Melbourne in 2017.

He was arrested in the city centre on Monday after a fight in a laneway which allegedly involved him and two others.

Last year, police issued a A$100,000 ($68,000) reward for information leading to his arrest.

They had been searching since February 2017 when his 36-year-old brother was fatally injured at Westfield Doncaster - one of the nation's biggest shopping centres. The victim was attacked as he stepped out of a lift in a car park.

Police at the time described the attack as "brutal", and issued a murder warrant for Jonathan Dick after he was identified in CCTV footage. They have not provided any information on motivation.

Despite occasional reported sightings, he had evaded authorities since.

Mr Dick was listed one of Australia's 10 most wanted fugitives and authorities had issued warnings to the public not to approach him.

50-year-old message in a bottle washes up in Alaska

An Alaska man's hunt for firewood ended with the discovery of a different kind after he came across a 50-year-old message in a bottle.

Tyler Ivanoff found a letter written in Russian, and posted an appeal for a translation on his Facebook page.

It transpired the letter had been written by a sailor on board the Russian ship Sulak on 20 June 1969.

The story was picked up by Russian media, which tracked down the letter-writer, Captain Anatoly Botsanenko.

Mr Ivanoff said he had been searching for firewood some 20 miles (32 km) west of his home village of Shishmaref when he came upon the bottle, with a plastic cork stopper.

"I had to pull really hard. I used my teeth to really work it out," he told The Nome Nugget newspaper.

"It was still dry on the inside and still smelled like wine or whatever, old alcohol. The note was dry."

His appeal on Facebook prompted a translation of the still legible note:

"Sincere greetings! From the Russian Far East Fleet mother ship VRXF Sulak. I greet you who finds the bottle and request that you respond to the address Vladivostok -43 BRXF Sulak to the whole crew. We wish you good health and long years of life and happy sailing. 20 June 1969."

When Cpt Botsanenko, now 86 years old, was told of the note he reportedly burst into tears of joy.

He told the Russian TV channel Rossiya 1: "It looks like my handwriting. For sure! East industry fishing fleet! E-I-F-F!"

Cpt Botsanenko was reported to have overseen the construction of the Sulak in 1966 and sailed on it until 1970.

Mr Ivanoff noted on Facebook that it was "pretty cool how a small photo grew into a story", and has said he may consider launching his own message in a bottle one day.

Groom of Afghan wedding where 63 people died speaks

The bridegroom whose wedding was targeted by a suicide bomber in the Afghan capital Kabul says he has "lost hope" after the deadly attack.

In a TV interview, Mirwais Elmi said his bride survived but his brother and other relatives were among the 63 people killed in Saturday's attack.

The Islamic State (IS) group has admitted carrying out the bombing, which also wounded more than 180.

President Ashraf Ghani described the attack as "barbaric".

He blamed the Taliban for "providing a platform to terrorists". The Taliban, who are engaged in peace talks with the US, condemned the attack.

In the interview with Tolo News, Mirwais Elmi recalled greeting smiling guests in the packed wedding hall only to see their bodies carried out hours later.

"My family, my bride are in shock, they cannot even speak. My bride keeps fainting," he said.

"I've lost hope. I lost my brother, I lost my friends, I lost my relatives. I will never see happiness in my life again.

"I can't go to the funerals, I feel very weak ... I know that this won't be the last suffering for Afghans, the suffering will continue," he added.

The bride's father told Afghan media that 14 members of his family had died in the attack.

Despite the ongoing talks to try and end the 18-year US war, civilians across Afghanistan continue to suffer a tremendous toll.

Ogun boy sold for N1m recovered in Anambra

A seven-year-old boy, Joshua Joseph, who was declared missing two years ago, has been found with his adopted mother, Blessing Ozor, who allegedly paid N1.05m for his ‘adoption’.

Joshua was declared missing by his parents, who live in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, in 2017, but he was found by men of the state police command in Anambra State.

The boy, who had been renamed Chisom, was reportedly found in the home of Ozor, who claimed to have adopted him after paying N1.05m to a level-13 civil servant in the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs, Ifeoma Joy.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama, gave the details at the state police headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, on Sunday, while handing over Joshua to his father and parading Ozor and Joy in connection with the incident.

Makama said the boy was found after a thorough investigation by operatives of the command over the last two years.

The police boss stated that Joshua was stolen in Ijebu-Ode and sold to Ozor.

He said Joy belonged to a three-member syndicate, which specialised in stealing children and selling them to their clients.

Punch correspondent gathered that two other members of the syndicate, Rita and Angela, were been held in prisons in Edo and Ondo states, respectively, for the same offence.

It was gathered that both Rita and Angela gave information from their prison cells that led to the recovery of the boy and the arrest of Ozor and Joy in Anambra State.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, accused Joy of collecting over N1m from the acclaimed adopted mother and forged adoption documents from the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs.

Oyeyemi stated, “Joy is working at the Ministry of Women Affairs in Anambra State. She used the opportunity to arrange buyers for stolen children.

“In the cause of looking for her, she got transferred to four local government councils within one month in order to evade arrest.

“Our findings showed that eight children had been stolen by this syndicate from Ogun State and four had been recovered.

“One of the stolen children was found when the people, who adopted him, saw the boy’s picture on the pages of newspapers and returned him.”

While speaking with journalists, Joy denied the allegation against her, saying she was not involved in such an act.

She said, “I never did such a thing. I know the woman, who brought this boy, as a worker at the Peace Sisters’ Home.

“So, when my sister in fellowship (Ozor) came up with the idea of adopting a child, I called the other woman to help us get a boy and I gave Rita my sister’s particulars. When she finished with the particulars, she now came with this boy. I never knew the boy was stolen.”

Ozor said she gave Joy N150,000 for processing of the adoption papers and additional N900,000 when the deal was completed.

Ozor said amid sobs, “I am just a victim of circumstances by my foolishness. I went to a sister in our fellowship, who had adopted a child before, because I have two daughters already but I had a feeling for a son; my last daughter is 24 years old.

“I went through Rita because she and her husband had adopted a child before and they led me to this woman, Joy. I believed that everything was okay because she made me believe that she runs the Peace Sisters Home.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been pictured arriving in the south of France - their third private jet jaunt of the summer.

Dressed in a white blouse and cream sun hat, Meghan, 38, was spotted cradling baby Archie as she left the plane which is registered to NetJets.

Harry, wearing a green polo shirt, blue cap and sunglasses, was also seen leaving the plane, which experts said would have cost more than £20,000 to hire.

Little Archie, donning in a cream and navy striped jumper, was cradled by his mother as they disembarked from the aircraft and were met by aides.

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has vowed to reward anyone with useful information on overseas traveling schedule of South-East governors and other Igbo leaders.

“So if you are working in any Government House in Southeast and you know which city in the world the governor is going to be, inform us so that we will mobilize for him and you will be rewarded with N1m,” he declared”.

Kanu who disclosed this in a live broadcast on Sunday, opined that a member of the group had pledged to pay anyone with useful information on Igbo leaders.

Parents woke up to find three-month-old baby dead after falling into their bed

Devastated parents woke up to find their three-month-old baby dead in their bed after he rolled in from his cot.

An inquest into the boy's death was held at Hull Coroner's Court on Friday where the boy's mum gave an account of what happened on December 4, 2018.

She found her son lifeless, white and not breathing that morning, report Hull Live.

The day before the youngster was diagnosed with a viral upper respiratory tract infection after developing a chesty cough, with doctors telling his parents he would recover in a few days.

That night, the baby’s parents went to sleep around 9.45pm with the tot falling asleep in a cot next to their bed.

However, tragedy struck the following morning when the baby’s mum woke up suddenly to find the little boy in the couple’s bed.

She said: “At 9.45pm we all went to bed. Neither my partner nor I had been drinking and our baby was in a cot next to our bed.

“One of our daughters woke up crying in the night and her crying woke up our other daughter so they both came into our bed.

“My partner gave our baby a bottle and he woke up. He then placed him back in his cot and I woke up suddenly because of light coming in.

“I realised our baby had rolled into our bed. He was white and not breathing and I woke up my partner and told him to ring an ambulance.”

The boy’s father took him downstairs and placed him on a kitchen table before paramedics arrived around 8.30am.

The mother stayed with the couple’s other two children while her partner went in the ambulance with paramedics who administered adrenaline shots and chest compressions in a bid to revive the youngster.

On arrival at Hull Royal Infirmary, doctors made their desperate efforts to bring the baby back to his life but he was pronounced dead at 9.10am on December 4.

French waiter shot dead for being 'too slow with sandwich

A customer fatally shot a waiter at a pizzeria on the outskirts of Paris, apparently enraged at being made to wait for a sandwich, according to witnesses.

The waiter’s colleagues called police after he was shot in the shoulder with a handgun in the Noisy-le-Grand suburb, 15km east of Paris’s city centre on Friday night.

Attempts to revive the 28-year-old failed and he died at the scene. The gunman, who a witness said lost his temper “as his sandwich wasn’t prepared quickly enough”, fled the scene. Police have opened a murder investigation.

With the shooter still on the run on Saturday, shocked residents gathered outside the pizza and sandwich eatery. “He was killed for a sandwich?” one asked, unbelievingly. “It is sad,” said a 29-year-old woman. “It’s a quiet restaurant, without any problems. It just opened a few months ago.”

Woman thought she had kidney stones but gives birth to triplets instead

A new mother has had the shock of her life after she was rushed to hospital for what she thought was kidney stones and ended up giving birth to triplets.

Dannette Glitz, from Sturgis in South Dakota in the US, had no idea she was pregnant as she did not feel any movement and did not experience any morning sickness.

In a post on Facebook , she said: "I started getting pains in my back and in my side and it felt like kidney stones.

"I kept pushing on till Saturday and I was in so much pain all I could do was lie in my bed and cry. It hurt to move and even breath."

Dannette thought she needed urgent surgery to break up the stones and went into hospital on August 10.

But was shocked when the doctor told her she was 34-weeks pregnant.

Initially the doctor thought she was having twins and the third baby even took them by surprise.

Dannette told KOTA-TV: "You don’t ever see triplets being conceived naturally, let alone going 34 weeks without knowing.

Her friend has now set up a fundraising page to help the couple buy supplies for the babies.

A total of £727 has been raised so far .
